Thud

Yesterday saw a minor curiosity of one of the domains I look after getting a bunch of attention. It is quiet around here, but relatively shouty yesterday as a peak level of 2 emails a second where knocking at the door to come in, and being politely rejected with "no, try again later". Curiously enough, they where not trying again, these where mostly unique one off mails, from mainly .JP .BR and .BD (yes I had to look it up too - Bangladesh of all places). Like some kind of slow motion mailbomb. But to what ends?
Now two emails a second makes the logs look busy and gets my attention but it really doesn't cause anything to break sweat. At all. Not even a bit (mainly as they are not being accepted, just told to try again later). But it is a minor thorn in my otherwise placid natured side.
Now here is the part that I think is odd, and gives the whole thing a feel of something more than being a fire and forget nature. As soon as I set the no valid account from try again later to fail, hard, with no error level... it stopped. Pretty much within 5 minutes, the whole thing, with no retries, no new randomly generated addresses, no retries of mails that had been bounced previously, nothing. Nada.
Odd. Odd enough to want to share.
"I like graphs".
